After three hours in a bone-chilling arena watching my 7-year-old son play hockey, I sighed as I sank into my warm recliner on a wintery, Canadian, January night.

That particular night, I had no idea my son would re-route the course of my entire career.

Dylan walked into the living room; giant hockey bag slung over his shoulder. I briefly glanced at him with a grin that quickly dissipated when I noted the expression on his little face. His bag drops, and he sits down heavily on top of it. He lifts his head and looks at me with the biggest, darkest brown eyes you’ve ever seen, glossy from fighting back tears... and says to me in a shaky voice, “Dad, the other kids can raise the puck and I can't...” Before I could offer any response, he got up, lifted his giant bag back over his shoulder and stumbled down to the basement. All I was left with was the repetitive bong of a tennis ball slamming against the unfinished basement wall, the unrelenting tug on my heart, and a father’s determination to “fix it” for his son.
